Arlington, VA — Choosing head protection can be “confusing and complicated” because of the numerous options available, especially when trying to discern the key differences among them, researchers say.
The International Safety Equipment Association and J. J. Keller & Associates Inc. recently teamed up on a study to better understand practices and challenges related to head protection. The organizations surveyed professionals from multiple industries, including construction, manufacturing and transportation. Ninety percent of the respondents said they engage in making decisions related to personal protective equipment.
Among the key findings: Terminology is unclear. There’s significant confusion and oversimplification in the differences and similarities between hard hats and helmets.Safety managers experience multiple pain points with head protection. They’re faced with complicated decisions and are challenged to get employees to consistently wear head protection and find head protection that’s comfortable for all workers.Improved care and maintenance of head protection is needed. Only 54% of responding safety managers educate workers on how to maintain their head protection.Standards organizations, manufacturers and other experts have an educational opportunity. These groups can offer safety managers clarity, guidance and education to address the evolving head protection landscape.
“Head protection has been a cornerstone of workplace safety for decades,” ISEA President and CEO Cam Mackey said in a press release. “While the growing variety of head protection options provides greater choice, it has also introduced some confusion for safety professionals and workers. Addressing these challenges head-on and clarifying the most effective solutions and standards will ensure better protection and safety for all.”
ISEA and J. J. Keller have a published a report on the survey results.
